Collection of 1940s & 1950s Cherry Ames Books By Helen Wells & Julie Tatham (8 Hardcovers)

R380.00

My first impression was that these books might be a little stereotypical and sexist by todays standards, but on doing some research I came to realise that the main character Cherry Ames (short for Charity) is often portrayed solving problems and capturing criminals when men in authority have failed to do so, “demonstrating that women can succeed in the public, working world.”
So perhaps the notion that all little girls want to be nurses is a little dated, but I think the underlying themes are headed in the right direction- girl power!

“Published by Grosset & Dunlap between 1943 and 1968. Helen Wells (1910-1986) wrote volumes #1-7 and 17-27, and Julie Campbell Tatham (1908-1999), the creator of Trixie Belden, wrote volumes #8-16. Wells also created the Vicki Barr series. During World War 2, the series encouraged girls to become nurses as a way to aid the war effort. Cherry Ames original editions are prized by collectors and fans.

This collection consists of the following:

– Dude Ranch Nurse by Julie Tatham (1953)
– Rest Home Nurse by Julie Tatham (1954)
– Boarding School Nurse by Helen Wells (1955)
–  Cherry Ames Girls Annual (1959) *about 3 of the black & white images in this book have been coloured by a previous owner

Please note that these are second hand books and have probably passed through a number of hands in their lifetime. This is part of the charm for me, but for some it may be less so.
You can expect to find some general page discolouration, some creases in the spine and occasionally cover, the odd smudge or perhaps an inscription in the front. Condition will vary from book to book, but this will be reflected in the price and images.
Any major damage such as loose pages, tears, scribbling throughout the body of the book or missing dust jackets will be mentioned.
